The main reason for the establishment of the town was the discovery of phenomenally lucrative iron ore reefs in the area. Hence the name of the town -Thabazimbi - mountain of iron.

As the mine's activities increased a town developed. The town is situated at the feet of the Ysterberg and is surrounded by the Witfonteinrand and Boshofberg with the majestic Kransberg in the background.

These rugged mountains looming from bush-covered plains are the spectacular setting for the mine and the town that has grown around it.

The mine boasts one of the largest mining shafts in Africa. More than 2 million tons of ore are mined every year and hauled by train to Iscors iron and steel works.

Cattle ranching are the other predominant economic activity of this peaceful town.

Game farming has also developed into an important local industry.

The Marakele National Park north-east of the town and situated in the heart of the magnificent Waterberg Mountains characterised by contrasting majestic mountain landscapes, hills and valleys, as well as an impressive variety of wildlife.

Thabazimbi is one of the countrys most sought after destinations for lovers of hiking. Many nature trails, hikes and paths cover the towns scenic bushveld surroundings.
