Nestled in the Grass and Wetlands region of Mpumalanga, Carolina offers a stunning escape surrounded by the beauty of shimmering lakes, rivers, and lush landscapes. This scenic area is rich in natural charm, making it a perfect destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts alike. Historically, the town of Carolina was established in 1882 as a stopover for wagon trains travelling between Johannesburg and the bustling gold fields of the Kaap Valley. It was founded by farmer C.J. Coetzee, who offered portions of his farm to fellow farmers on the condition that the town be named after his wife. Despite being destroyed during the Second Anglo-Boer War, Carolina was rebuilt, and today, visitors can still admire the remarkable examples of sandstone architecture in its public buildings. One of the area’s highlights is the breathtaking Komati Gorge and the winding Komati River, offering an idyllic setting for a range of outdoor activities. Here, visitors can enjoy a day of picnicking, swimming, fishing, or simply relaxing in the warm sun. The area is also a haven for watersports, adding an element of adventure for those seeking it. For birdwatchers, the Komati area is a true gem, home to an abundance of vibrant and diverse bird species. Just northwest of Carolina, you’ll find the picturesque Nooitgedacht Nature Reserve, a popular destination for birding enthusiasts with over 200 bird species calling it home. Beyond birdwatching, the reserve offers thrilling horseback riding and hiking trails, including exciting two-day trails where adventurous travellers can stay overnight in cosy trail huts. These trails, along with a variety of day hikes, provide ample opportunity to immerse yourself in the stunning beauty of the region. Carolina is a perfect destination for those looking to connect with nature, enjoy a variety of outdoor activities, and experience the tranquil charm of Mpumalanga.
