Better known as Louis Trichardt, Makhado offers accommodation near Kruger National Park, which remains one of the main tourist attractions in South Africa. Lying at the foot of the densely forested Soutpansberg mountain range, Louis Trichardt and the surrounding area are the land of litchis, bananas, mangoes, nuts, tea and coffee - a rugged, hot terrain famous for the giant baobab and the indigo mountains in whose shadow it rests. Louis Trichardt is small, charming and popular because it serves as a thoroughfare for all of those coming from or going to the Kruger National Park. The national road, the N1, runs right through the town, which makes it an important commercial, industrial and residential centre in this northern part of the country - no surprise that it is regarded as the gateway to Africa.

Directions:

From Polokwane International Airport: 1. Start on Gateway Street and keep heading southeast for about 290 m. 2. Hang a left to stay on Gateway Street and follow it for another 1.5 km. 3. Turn left onto Landdros Maré Street (the R101) and keep going for 6.6 km. 4. Merge onto the N1 (just a heads-up, this is a toll road) and settle in for a 93.9 km stretch. 5. When you hit the roundabout, take the second exit to stay on the N1 for about 5.1 km. 6. At the next roundabout, take the first exit onto Stubbs Street and drive for 800 m. 7. Turn right towards Forestry Road (it's a short little connector, only about 72 m). 8. Finally, take a slight left onto Forestry Road and go for 210 m. 9. You'll see your destination on the right-hand side.
