Fish River Lodge is situated in the 45 000 hectare Canyon Nature Park and is a partner in the Greater Fish River Complex, a public private partnership that aims to co manage the greater Fish River Canyon Complex for enhanced landscape and biodiversity conservation and social economic development.

We pride ourselves in excellent and above all friendly service, good food and our staff are all fully trained to make you feel comfortable and enjoy your stay.

Experience first hand the geological forces that unfolded 300 million years ago, when the Fish River began to etch its way through hard quartzite forming a Canyon 90 km long, 549 metres deep and 28 km wide in some places, making it the world`s second largest Canyon.

Set in a grove of ancient Quiver trees (Aloe dichotoma), the Lodge has been carefully designed to echo the terraced and rugged terrain as well as the colours and textures of the landscape thereby offering guests a pleasant change from the typical safari type lodge found elsewhere in Africa.

There is a blend of classical and contemporary furnishings and many of the accessories have been made by San and Nama communities whose ancestors once roamed the terrain; authenticity, comfort and simplicity are key to the Lodge`s unique ambiance.

Black eagles enjoy the thermal updrafts and fascinating desert adapted plants thrive in this unique eco system. Rare mountain zebra and elusive klipspringer, oryx and kudu roam the remote valleys and side canyons, whilst Cape clawless otter, fish eagle and other water-loving species inhabit the permanent pools along the river.

The geology of the canyon is as fascinating as the archaeology and for the expert or the curious, there is much to discover and learn. Ancient pictoglyph sites are in abundance as are Stone Age tools, a reminder of those who wandered the landscape and took refuge at permanent water holes in this harsh terrain thousands of years ago.

With only 8 meters from the rim of the Canyon, at Fish River Lodge you will truly feel as though you are on the edge of eternity.

Accommodation at Fish River Lodge:
Twenty spacious chalets are positioned along the rim with sufficient distance from each other to ensure privacy and quiet at all times. Dry-packed stone walls cover the outer chalets and large windows offer light and views over the canyon whilst at night guests can watch falling stars through the roof top windows above.

Each chalet has a separate shower, dressing facility, double basins, toilet and fan whilst an additional outdoor shower offers a chance to cool down under the stars on warm nights. An outdoor `bed` is available to guests who would like to sleep under the stars. The main Lodge caters for indoor and outdoor living given the extremes of weather that can be experienced throughout the year.

Good home-cooked food with stylish touches is served on glowing handcrafted tables from reclaimed wood next to crackling fires in winter or outside on the deck in summer. Drinks can be enjoyed in the indoor or outdoor bar area overlooking a swimming pool. The Lodge furnishings have been kept simple (without compromising on comfort) and the colour schemes chosen to reflect the subtle hues of the distant canyon.

Items of interest like the old German colonial cupboard and doors and hand-sewn traditional Nama dress in the main Lodge, in contrast with the modern architecture and some of the furnishings reflecting the rich history of the south.

Directions:

From Windhoek
- Take the B1 south out of Windhoek to Keetmanshoop, then turn right onto the B4 towards Luderitz. After 72km turn left onto the D463 towards "Feldschuhorn".

- Drive for 85km on the D463, it feels like you are driving forever, but please keep going. You will pass through three or four closed gates, please reclose them after you. Eventually you will see a signboard on the left hand side which reads "Canyon Nature Park". Turn left after the sign.

- Continue for 5km on a rough farm track, until you see two farm houses. Follow the small signs to the lodge which is a further 14km.

Please do not take the C12 to Fish River Canyon or you will end up on the other side of the canyon with a 4 hour drive back to the lodge! Also, do not use the D462 as this road has river beds with thick sand.

Your journey time once you turn onto the D463 gravel road is approximately 2 hours so please leave plenty of time to arrive at the lodge in daylight, it will be worth it!

A vehicle with good ground clearance, such as an SUV, is recommended for travel on the gravel roads in south Namibia.

From Luderitz and Aus:
Take the B4 towards Keetmanshoop. At Goegeb turn right onto the D459. After approximately 82 km turn left onto the D463. After another 18 km you will see a sign board on the right which reads Canyon Nature Park, turn right after this sign and follow the direction in 3. above.

From Sossusvlei:
Take the C27 to Betta & Helmeringhausen. At Helmeringhausen take the C14 to Bethanie and Goageb. At Goageb turn left onto the B4, after 35km turn right onto the D463 towards "Feldschuhorn" & follow the directions in 2. above.

From Noordoewer Border Post Via Grunau:
Take the B1 towards Grunau and Keetmanshoop. At Grunau turn left onto the C12 and continue until it meets the B4. Turn left onto the B4 towards Luderitz. After 28km turn left onto the D463 towards "Feldschuhorn" & follow the directions in 2. above.

From Noordoewer Border Post Via Rosh Pinah This option is for 4x4 vehicles only (road currently closed due to flooding - January 2010)

At Noordoewer petrol station, turn left onto the C13 and drive on the gravel road next to the Orange River to Rosh Pinah. From Rosh Pinah continue on the C13 for 47km then turn right onto the D463. After approximately 95km turn right, still on the D463. After another 18 km you will see a signboard which reads "Canyon Nature Park". Turn right after the sign & follow the directions in 3. above.

Fly In:
Whilst Fish River Lodge can be reached by car, a fly-in option is an exciting alternative to the long drive and takes approximately 2 hours flying-time from Windhoek. With an excellent air-strip only 10 minutes from the Lodge, guests will experience the Canyon, its maze of side canyons and of course the glistening Fish River as it meanders through the Canyon, at its most awe inspiring from the air.

You will be transferred from the air strip to the Lodge where a welcome drink will refresh you as you take in the splendors of the Canyon from ground level.

We highly recommend a minimum of a two-night stay, allowing you time to rest and relax on day one before embarking on the 4 x 4 drive down into the heart of the Canyon on Day 2.
