Upon the establishment of the Republic of Stellaland in 1882, the town of Vryburg was proclaimed as its capital. This honour soon turned industrious for the town, and it grew rapidly.

Today the agricultural an industrial centre of the Western Region, the town hosts the country's third largest agricultural show and a series of events dedicated to outdoor activities in the scenic, rugged area surrounding the town.

Hiking Trails
The area offers some of the province's finest walks an trails, detail of which are obstainable from the Vryburg municipality. The most notable are the medium length Leon Taljaard and Vryburg walks.

Leon Taljaard Nature Reserve & Museum
A tranquil reserve 5km from the town. Perfect for a family picnic while watching a variety of wildlife and birdlife.

Voortrekker Monument
Erected in 1935 in commemoration of the Great Trek.

Vryburg Museum
A well laid out museum detailing the town's economic and social history with a series of interesting exhibits.

Weekly Cattle Sale
A unique experience: the largest cattle sale in the Southern Hemisphere - every year 250 000 head change hands.
