A charming town, laid out at the peak of the 1950's gold rush on the banks of the Sand River. In 1890, two railway surveyors from the US state of Virginia etched the name of their birthplace on a boulder near the farm Merriespruit.

When a siding was eventually made at this spot, the name was adopted, and it stuck after the discovery of gold resulted in a mushrooming settlement.
