Extra virgin olive oil is being produced and sold at this historic estate in Somerset West.

The cold-pressed, deliciously fresh oil is a blend of five Italian Olive cultivars - grown specifically for oil - which thrive on the hills behind the gracious homestead. Also available is a pure, fruity olive paste, and young olive trees may be bought from the farm nursery.

Morgenster was once part of Vergelegen, which was divided after the recall of Cape Governor Willem Adriaan van der Stel in 1708. The homestead is not open to the public, but its particularly fine baroque gable can be viewed from the front avenue.

To reach Morgenster, take the Vergelegen turn-off on the Lourensford Road. Oil and paste are available by the 6-bottle case from the estate, Monday to Friday, 10:00 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 17:00.

Tastings of oil can be arranged for groups.
