A network of rivers and relatively high summer rainfall have created a fertile wilderness of riverine forests, flood plains, swamps and open woodland in the Kavango and Caprivi.

Well over 400 of Namibia's bird species occur in this part of the country. The region is steadily gaining a reputation as a retreat for bird-watchers, nature lovers and discerning travellers. It is also of growing interest to scientists studying the wetlands system and its flora and fauna.

The river-side town of Rundu, on the banks of the Okavango River, is situated in Kavango, home of Namibia's woodcarvers. This ancient craft, handed down over generations, is a flourishing industry today. At the Mbungura Woodcraft Co-operative, wooden carvings are made and offered for sale.

Katima Mulilo, the major centre in Caprivi, is the gateway to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe and the Chobe National Park in Botswana. The proximity of the Caprivi region to Angola, Botswana and Zambia with their active craft industries, gives impetus to Caprivian carvers, basket makers and potters.

Caprivian pots are noted for their distinctive beauty and symmetry. The fine workmanship of Caprivian artists can be seen and purchased at the Caprivi Art Centre, situated next to the hospital in Katima Mulilo.

In Kavango and Caprivi game viewing and bird watching is supplemented by recreation and adventure provided by the many rivers of the region. White-river rafting is at its most exciting on the turbulent waters of the Zambezi. For anglers there is the challenge of that sought after trophy, the tiger fish. Classic hunting safaris are offered in some areas.

Sunset river cruises on pontoons, photo safaris, swamp safaris, horseback trails, boating, a trip in a dug out canoe and game viewing, either on foot or in open 4x4 vehicles, can be enjoyed, while some towns and lodges offer golfing facilities.

For the more intrepid there are crocodilespotting expeditions by night, and camel safaris to Bushmanland.

Day trips can be taken across the border into the Chobe National Park in Botswana. For those wishing to travel in luxury and style, a cruise aboard a river boat, is the ultimate river experience.

Luxury Lodges overlook the mighty Kavango River where crocodiles lurk and where hippopotamus heads bob secretly on the water.
