A 50 km circular trail taking 3 days to complete. Permits can be obtained in Ugie and a map and brochure is available. Accommodation includes a hut, bungalow and cave that sleep 12 each and have toilets and water.
Attractions include a Protea woodland, indigenous forest, caves with Bushman paintings and magnificent panoramic views overlooking Ugie. Take note - rapidly changeable weather and mist occasionally at the top of the mountain. There is a daily limit of 12 hikers for this trail.
This moderately strenuous circular walk begins and ends approximately 6 km north-west of the town of Ugie. The first day begins at Ben Vorlich hut and leads through magnificent woodland forest for 17 km to Fontana hut, where hikers overnight. The second day is a 16-km walk to Craigmore where hikers sleep in a comfortable cave, before setting out for the final stretch home to Ben Vorlich.
Along the way blesbok, mountain reedbuck and dassie may be spotted. The birds of interest include crowned and black eagles, bearded vulture and the lanner falcon.
There are stunning rock pools at the top of the mountain, in which a new species of fairy shrimp was recently discovered. The walk is clearly marked with footprints and arrows.
