Madimolle, located northeast of Bela-Bela, is about a two-hour drive from Johannesburg, nestled in the heart of the Waterberg. Formerly known as Nylstroom, the town’s fascinating history makes for a captivating story. In the 1860s, a determined group of Voortrekkers (Dutch emigrant pioneers) left the Cape Colony in search of a better life in the interior. Among them were the Jerusalem Trekkers, a group with a singular goal: to find the Holy Land. After a long and arduous journey, the group eventually arrived at a stream near what they believed to be a ruined pyramid. Convinced they had discovered the Nile, they settled along its banks—about 10,000 kilometres short of their intended destination. The ‘pyramid’ turned out to be just a natural hill, known locally as Modimolle, meaning “the forefather’s spirit has eaten.” The river, which they named the Nyl, was actually a tributary of the Mogalakwena River. The hill also referred to as Kranskop, is considered sacred by the local community. It’s said to have inspired the design of the Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria, created by architect Gerhard Moerdijk. The Dutch Reformed church built by the early settlers in 1889 remains the oldest church in sub-Saharan Africa, north of Pretoria. Today, Madimolle serves as a key support town for the Waterberg Biosphere and the surrounding farming community. Its wide streets and various shops offer a gateway to the stunning bushveld terrain of the biosphere. The region’s nature reserves, game reserves, and wilderness areas draw wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers year-round. The area’s scenic beauty, with its clusters of trees, shrubs, and the striking
