Fort Nottingham is a small, quiet village situated just a short distance from the livelier and more bustling town of Nottingham Road in the Midlands. The fort was established in 1856 when Queen Victoria dispatched the 45th Sherwood Foresters from Nottinghamshire to create a defensive outpost against San raids from the foothills of the Drakensberg. Not far from the fort, which helped deter further raids and encouraged settlers, particularly Scots, to move into the area, a railway station was constructed at the intersection leading to Fort Nottingham. Initially named Karkloof Station, despite not being anywhere near Karkloof, it was later renamed Nottingham Road Station and eventually shortened to simply Nottingham Road. In stark contrast to the lively Nottingham Road, Fort Nottingham is tranquil and modest, with its town hall and museum (housed in the old fort) as the main attractions. The village also features several homes dating back to the late 1850s. Fort Nottingham’s character might have been very different if the railway had passed directly through it. Legend has it that one of the early settlers, possibly Duncan McKenzie, who owned much of the land, persuaded the surveyor to route the train line away from the fort. Consequently, the station ended up being located 11km to the east of the fort when it was eventually built.
