Area Info:

Fundamentally a coal mining and beef farming town, Vryheid - from the Afrikaans word for ‘freedom’ - lies roughly 70 kilometres north east of Dundee in Zululand. Whilst Vryheid’s surrounds are largely dominated by timber farming - hence the extensive wattle and timber plantations - crops such as groundnuts and maize, and mining, the town also lies near the sources of four major rivers, the White and Black Umfolozi, Mkhuze and Pongolo. The Vryheid Nature Reserve, just outside town, that includes both one-day and two-day hikes, some small game and a bounteous bird life, and the Klipfontein Bird Sanctuary, two kilometres south west of the town and part of one of the aforementioned wetlands, are also worth a visit.

Directions:

From Richards Bay Airport: 1. Get onto E Central Arterial and head toward the John Ross Highway R34. That's about 6.5 kilometres. 2. Before that, start by heading south-west on Fish Eagle Flight towards Kolgans Dans for 1.7 kilometres. 3. Take a right onto Nkoninga Road, 550 metres. 4. Then, a left onto E Central Arterial for 4.3 kilometres. 5. Follow the R34 all the way to Park Street in Vryheid. This is the bulk of the journey, around 218 kilometres. 6. You'll first use any lane to turn right onto John Ross Highway/R34. 7. Keep following the R34 for 59.7 kilometres. 8. Next, turn right onto R34/R66 and stay on the R34 again. This leg is about 151 kilometres. 9. Then, take a left to stick with the R34 for another 6.1 kilometres. 10. Turn right - a short 1.5 kilometres. 11. Continue straight onto Kerk Street, just 250 metres. 12. Follow Park Street to Kommissie Street, 550 metres. 13. Turn left onto Park Street, 550 metres. 14. Then, turn left at the 3rd cross street onto Kommissie Street for the final 20 metres. Your destination, 48 Kommissie Street, Vryheid, will be right there on your left.
