Founded in 1849 in the eastern Free State, South Africa, Harrismith is a historically significant crossroads town situated alongside the N3 highway midway between Johannesburg and Durban. Located at the base of the prominent, flat-topped Platberg Mountain, the town serves as a key gateway to the Drakensberg region and is a major agricultural hub for wool production. Beyond its role as a busy highway transit and refuelling stop, Harrismith features distinct sandstone architecture, including its 1907 National Monument Town Hall, and offers direct access to outdoor recreational activities at the nearby Platberg Nature Reserve and the expansive Sterkfontein Dam.
Attractions:
* Platberg Nature Reserve: The massive Table Mountain towering over the town, perfect for hiking, mountain biking, and seeing wildlife like eland and wildebeest.
* Sterkfontein Dam Nature Reserve: Known for its crystal-clear blue waters, ideal for windsurfing, sailing, and world-class yellowfish fly-fishing.
* The 250-Million-Year-Old Fossilised Tree: A 33-meter-long petrified tree trunk located right in the Deborah Retief Garden in the centre of town.
* Harrismith Town Hall: A beautiful national monument built in 1907 out of local sandstone and red brick.
* Harrismith Country Club: Established in 1887, this is the historic third-oldest golf club in South Africa.
* Kerkenberg: A nearby historical site featuring the rock where Piet Retief's daughter painted his name during the 1837 Voortrekker trek.
* San Bushman Paintings: Ancient rock art sites located in the sandstone caves just outside of the town.
