The nights here are wonderful. Traffic noises consist of cattle calling the playful calves from across the valley and the odd jackal sound.

Early morning walks during Autumn are fresh affairs. Sometimes the full-moon keeps a watchful eye.
Springwater Cottages are set on the southern edge of our valley and is located west of Ficksburg. Guests are afforded stunning views over the different crops including maize, wheat and sunflower, as they mature with seasonal change. Sunrise greets you every morning over the hills and our legendary sunsets are surreal.
The accommodation offered is rustic casual luxury. We have 3 cottages, which can accommodate up to 4 people each, in comfort. The cottages are well appointed with cutlery, crockery, cooking and refrigeration. We do not have television. We use only Ember Down goose down duvets and 400 Thread count linen. Efficient wood stoves ensure that fireplace warmth and comfort on cold, snowy and rainy days are provided. As an added bonus you will have the opportunity to bathe in pure spring water. Our water is soft and sweet, tested by the UOVS and declared awesome, well they stated it is safe to drink, clear of any contaminants and of excellent quality, we think it is awesome.
This is a place to slow down, catch your breath again and revive your soul. Nothing has been shot on this farm since 2007, so our small game and birds are tame enough to observe easily: we are about peace and quiet. However, should you feel the need to speed up your blood flow, we have wonderful walks, stunning running and beautiful biking trails.
As dusk settles, you are almost guaranteed to be notified of such by a chorus of jackal as the different packs check on each other. Our evenings here are the energy drinks for the soul. Slow sundowners lead to companionable braais and satisfying dinners.
Accommodation at Springwater Cottages: We have 3 cottages, each can accommodate a max of 4 adults. Each cottage have a fully equipped kitchenette with a large fridge/freezer combo. A breakfast/dinner table for 4 in the kitchen forms part of the open plan arrangement with the lounge area.
Each cottage has a fireplace, or rather an efficient woodstove; ideal for the cold winters in the Free State.
Bedding is all from Ember Down, i.e. Goosedown duvets and pillows, 400 Thread Count 100% Egyptian cotton linen. The main bedroom has a Queen size bed and the second bedroom has 2 x Singles or 1 King.
In addition to the inside showers, the outside shower at each Cottage makes for glorious showers in Summer, with spectacular views on the koppie behind the cottages.
Braai facilities at each cottage face the valley and makes for wonderful times spent gazing over the valley while enjoying a sundowner.
Shebang (Cottage 1): The Main bedroom is in an open-plan configuration with the Lounge area and both bedrooms share the en-suite bathroom, each with their own entrance from the bedrooms. The bathroom is large with a shower and a lovely corner bath. This cottage is ideal for a couple, small family or 2 couples comfortable with each other.
Nook (Cottage 2): Two bedrooms, each with their own bathroom, en-suite. The Main bedroom has a Queen bed and the Second bedroom has 2 x single beds or 1 King.
Wig-wam (Cottage 3): Two bedrooms, each with their own bathroom, en-suite. The Main bedroom has a Queen bed and the Second bedroom has 2 x single beds or 1 King.
Activities:
Look, the whole point of Springwater Cottages is to learn "slow down" again. We understand however that one needs to get the circulation going - to various degrees. Below are some suggestions. Should you have specific ideas/requests, please talk to us. Maybe we can arrange something to suit you particular desire.
Things to do, Right here: Hiking/walks - From lazy ambling, sundowner walks to "keep up baby" walks. MTB Trails - Social to very long distance. All on gravel road. Feed the sheep - Sometimes we have a "hanslam" (orphan lamb, "poddy lamb") and the kids will love helping us feeding this baby. Watch the stars - Our stars are just the most beautiful and clearest of them all. Sundowners outside - at one of our many viewpoints.
Things to do within 20 km: Hike to a stone-age village site. 6 km drive from here; the walk is fairly substantial as it involves a bit of steep ground. About an hour. McKinley Chocolates - there is a reason why good chocolate is irresistible. Visit "the Cabin" - A roadside collection of shops and undoubtedly the best breakfast within 400 km. Visit Constantia - another beautiful roadstall. Ben Nevis - Cherry Cellar. They make a mean Cherry Liquer. Pellisier Gallery - a treasure trove of South African art, with its principal focus the Pierneef San Murals. This can be viewed by appointment only. Please chat to Renette Humphreys 084 664 3491. Things to do within 100 km: Clarens - this is variety. From delightful shopping, dining to adventure sports with Clarens Extreme. Fertility Caves - (close to Clarens).
Things to do within 100 km+: 150 km : Afriski. 191 km : Semonkong Lodge. Wonderful, magical and peaceful. The home of Donkey Pub crawling and the World Record Abseil.
