Visit the world-renowned Skeleton Coast and stay at the iconic Shipwreck Lodge for an unforgettable adventure, where you will experience uninhabited expanses, premium service, opulent accommodation and adventurous activities.

The lodge and cabins are one-of-a-kind in the world, resembling the stranded ships that litter the shores and waters of this coastline.  Broken spars reach for skies, and the wooden structures appear to be lying in the ever-encroaching sands of the desert.

The interiors of both the main lodge and cabins are an exquisite blend of warm woods, hand-crafted furniture, and classic finishing touches by local designers and artists.  The focus when creating this wondrous space was elegance and comfort amidst the harsh environment surrounding it.

On arrival, you will be welcomed with warm cloths to wipe away the dusty travels and welcome drinks, while the staff take your luggage to your cabins.  Begin your unparalleled experience here by immediately investigating your accommodation, or have a refreshment on the deck as you absorb the fantastic views of desert and sea.

The main lodge holds a lounge, restaurant, and deck – all spaces to relax while sipping a drink.  The lounge is a sanctuary to retreat to, with comfortable couches to ensconce yourself in while taking in the views of the desert through the expansive windows, or perhaps accepting a challenge to a game of chess while the coal stove warms you.  The deck is the perfect place to recline on while watching as the setting sun dips behind the Atlantic Ocean.

While game in the area is plentiful, sightings can never be guaranteed as the animals wander free over vast expanses.  You can hope to see Danny the elephant, our local charmer who frequents the area, or perhaps the fierce desert-adapted lions as they stalk prey.  Brown hyena, jackals, gemsbok and a host of other smaller game inhabit the park as well, having learnt to survive in these desolate conditions.

Wi-Fi is accessible in the main area through a voucher system, although it may be intermittent at times due to our remote location.  We kindly ask guests to avoid large uploads and downloads to ensure a smoother connection.  Please note that there is no cell phone reception in this area.

So sit back, unwind, and let us take care of everything else, delivering a fantastical experience to any guest entering this domain.

Accommodation:
Ten cabins, eight twin and two family units suitable for four people, are spread out along the dunes, looking out over the desert towards the ocean.  Wooden walkways and sand paths connect the lodge to the accommodations.

The rooms feature luxurious furnishings, distinctive décor reminiscent of a ship’s cabin, ample storage space, and a safe for your valuables. The spacious bathroom boasts elegant hand basins, a toilet, and a refreshing shower.  A cosy fireplace and complimentary port provide warmth and comfort during foggy evenings, and a turn-down service is offered so you can return to a warm haven when you’re ready to.

As every effort is made to lighten our footprint on these shores, we use solar power and water is retrieved from borehole.  Electronic items can be charged in your cabin, and although there is no kettle we supply flasks of hot water on request at any time of day for the coffee station.

Do remember to advise the staff that you require one early morning, so you can sit on your private deck and absorb the dawn of a new day with a hot drink in hand.  Expansive windows offer a picturesque view of the desert, so you can awaken to the gentle glow of dawn and the waves crashing on the shores in the distance.

Hairdryers can be supplied on request as well, and in the event of bringing your own, please ask staff if it is possible to use them.

The all-inclusive rates are carefully crafted to provide a worry-free experience, covering collections and returns to your vehicles, all meals, daily scheduled activities, a wide range of beverages, and the convenient laundry service.

The Restaurant:

The restaurant offers three meals a day, with the addition of homemade cakes and a selection of coffees and teas in the late afternoon, although you are welcome to request assistance at any time of day.  Dietary restrictions or requirements are catered for, although please do advise your booking agent in advance, as we are in a remote location and planning is required.

Area Info:

Conservancies:
Shipwreck Lodge has partnered with two conservancies, namely the Puros and Sesfontein, established in May 2000 and July 2003 respectively. This partnership was made with the longevity of the local people and conservation in mind, and Shipwreck Lodge employs staff from these conservancies, thus supporting multiple households. In addition, the lodge has purchased 4x4 vehicles for the conservancies to assist them with wildlife and environmental management, furthering our commitment to conservation and sustainable tourism efforts.

The local communities that live on the conservancies are primarily Ovahimba and Ovaherero. It is important to note that approaching them should always be done with respect and sensitivity for their culture and ways of life, and a willingness to learn about their unique and traditional customs. The tribes differ somewhat, however, they are primarily farmers with excellent results in these arid regions.

The original four conservancies were established in Namibia in 1998, and they became the model for economic growth and survival in the harsh rural settings. As they have the right to establish tourist enterprise ventures, they began to partner with the private sector and lodges were established on these vast tracts of land. These lodges bring them revenue and experience, and there are a large number of NGOs that have various initiatives in these remote areas, intent on betterment for the communities.
