Quatermain`s 1920`s Safari Camp is situated on Amakhala game Reserve in the Eastern Cape. This classic 1920`s style expedition camp is modeled on the heyday of exploration, that golden era when adventure lay around every corner. Our intimate 6 bed camp offers you the opportunity to experience "Africa under Canvas", with three white 1920`s style safari tents; the choice of pioneers, hunters and explorers of that time.

Relax in the centralized boma area where local delicacies are prepared in front of you on an open fire, and dinner is served under a blanket of stars. Every effort has been made to stay true to the expedition style, with concessions only being allowed for rustic bathrooms with modern conveniences. Guests at our expedition camp can enjoy the excitement of "Big 5" safaris on the award winning Amakhala Game Reserve.

Accommodation at Quatermain`s 1920`s Safari Camp:
Our tents are situated deep in the bush to guarantee maximum privacy. Enjoy your own private deck, and if you are lucky you may see an elusive bush buck or hear the cry of the African fish eagle. Each tent is equipped with military campaign style furniture similar to that used by the early explorers, and a beautiful, rustic en suite bathroom comprising hot shower and flushing toilet.

All our tents have en suite bathrooms consisting of flushing toilets, a basin, and a hot shower. Both double and twin tents are available.

Activities:

To experience the real nature of the African bush and enjoy some of the many wildlife encounters this area has to offer we run twice daily game drives. Your hosts Riaan and Julie Brand are both experienced rangers and will do their utmost to ensure that you have a safari that you will never forget. As we operate in “Big 5” areas you have a chance of seeing elephant, white and black rhino, leopard, buffalo and lion as well as a variety of other game including hyena, cheetah, zebra, giraffe, many species of antelope and much more. As well as the larger, more obvious creatures your hosts will delight in showing you the smaller but no less important members of this ecosystem as well as the birds and plants.

Even during inclement weather the game drives are not to be missed and your drive is made quite comfortable by the provision of waterproofs and blankets.

A mid drive stop to have a welcome coffee on the morning drive or a cool sundowner in the afternoon all adds to the experience of a lifetime.

If you prefer, swap one of your drives for a guided wilderness walk on the main reserve. Enjoy all the sights and sounds of the bush, and maybe even see some of the larger animals whilst you are on foot.

The area surrounding the camp contains superb and diverse birdlife encompassing fynbos, thicket, and grassland biomes. We also have the Bushman’s River which ensures we see a wealth of water birds.

Your host Riaan Brand is a specialist bird guide and can introduce you to the many beautiful species that surround us at Quatermain’s Camp. You’ll never look at birds in the same way again.

We would like to offer guests booking for 3 nights or more the opportunity to replace 1 of their game drives with a guided walk on the main Amakhala Game Reserve (in a Big 5 area only for guests over the age of 16 years), a guided birding walk, or a guided bush walk in a non-dangerous area.

Quatermains 1920s Safari Camp is happy to accept bookings from family groups that include children under the age of 12, on an exclusive use basis.

Clothing and Accessories:
