Dundee is a historic town in northern KwaZulu-Natal, situated in the scenic Biggarsberg region and surrounded by mountains such as Indumeni, Mpati and Talana. It is part of the Endumeni Municipality and serves as an important centre for the surrounding farming and rural communities. Dundee is roughly equidistant between Johannesburg and Durban, making it a convenient stopover when travelling through northern KwaZulu-Natal. Dundee is particularly well known for its rich military history and position on the KwaZulu-Natal Battlefields Route. The town was the site of the Battle of Talana in 1899, one of the first major engagements of the Anglo-Boer War. The area also has strong connections to the Anglo-Zulu War, with famous sites including Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift within easy reach. The town has an interesting coal-mining heritage. Coal was discovered in the area during the 1860s, and mining played a major role in Dundee’s early development. The town grew rapidly and became known as “Coalopolis”, while historic buildings and landmarks throughout the town still reflect its mining-era prosperity.
