Mkiva is a rural area near Nqamakwe in the Eastern Cape, within the Mnquma Local Municipality and Amathole District Municipality. Nqamakwe is a historic settlement with strong connections to the history and heritage of the amaMfengu people. The area is characterised by rural landscapes, traditional communities and rolling countryside, providing a quieter setting away from larger urban centres. Nqamakwe and its surrounding communities are also associated with several cultural and historical sites, including rock-art sites linked to San communities. Visitors can explore attractions in the wider Mnquma area, including Bawa Falls, a natural heritage site featuring a waterfall of approximately 103 metres, and Nongqawuse’s Pool, which is associated with the Xhosa cattle-killing movement of 1857- 1858. The region also contains caves and rock-art sites of historical and cultural significance. Mkiva and Nqamakwe provide access to the wider Eastern Cape while offering a predominantly rural setting. Driving from East London, approaching the Ndabakazi junction, take the TSOMO off-ramp towards Nqamakwe/Queenstown on R409 road. Drive for 10km on R409, look for a brown PONI Hotel road sign on your left directing you to turn right on 300m into a gate in front of Ashante Guest House. After entering the gate, turn LEFT immediately and follow the road and signpost leading you to our Main Gate. At the gate, if closed, call us.
