Ngonyam Safari Lodge is an intimate, family-run retreat set within the Makalali Private Game Reserve, where water, bush and the distant Drakensberg Mountains meet. Overlooking Ngonyam Dam, the lodge offers a safari escape defined by quiet surroundings, personal hosting and remarkable wildlife encounters, and can be booked on an exclusive-use basis for complete privacy.
The lodge accommodates up to six guests in three luxury tented chalets, each privately positioned to embrace the surrounding landscape. The spacious chalets feature king-size beds that can be converted to twins on request, along with air-conditioning, standing fans, Wi-Fi and standard hotel bathroom amenities. Each unit includes a private en-suite bathroom fitted with his-and-hers basins, a bathtub, an indoor shower and an outdoor shower with hot and cold running water, allowing guests to experience the bush in comfort.
The lodge’s main relaxed area invites guests to unwind with a fully stocked bar and lounge, while the sparkling swimming pool overlooks the dam, creating a peaceful setting where wildlife can often be spotted from the water’s edge. Days unfold at a gentle pace shaped by safari traditions and the rhythms of nature.
Guests explore the 25,000-hectare reserve on morning and afternoon game drives, where sightings may include the Big Five along with a wide variety of other mammals and birdlife.
Between activities, the lodge offers quiet moments to relax beside the pool or simply watch animals gather at the dam. Meals are an integral part of the experience, served on a full-board basis with late brunch after morning drives, afternoon high tea and a three-course dinner shared in an informal setting.
When weather permits, evenings often end with dinner in the boma beneath a canopy of stars, completing a safari experience that is both relaxed and deeply connected to its surroundings.
