Kukummi Lodge offers dinner, bed & breakfast and is located in Rood Nature Reserve, the most beautiful part of the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Mountain Range, in Central Drakensberg. The access road is unpaved. All-terrain vehicles, & vehicles with good clearance are recommended during the Summer rainy season.

Each 18 square-metre thatched-roof rondawel contains a comfy queen-size bed and a private bathroom with a shower and basin, and a separate toilet and basin. Each fully carpeted unit contains a TV, tea/coffee, a wardrobe, a table and 2 chairs. Kukummi Lodge is nestled below this unique mountain range. Time slows down as you enter our gate and a deep sense of peace and relaxation prevails, promising for a restful stay.

If you have an adventurous spirit, enjoy nature and like something different then Kukummi Lodge is a special place to visit. Due to the incredible diversity of bird, plant and insect life, and a vast collection of San Rock Art paintings, the area has been declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Road access: During the Summer rainy season, a 4-wheel drive or a high-rise SUV is recommended (approximately October to March). For the rest of the year, a vehicle with good ground clearance is recommended. We have a scheduled free transfer for guests to/from a secure location on the main road each day, and transfers outside these times for a fee. Parking is available at this location.

* Breakfast is served in the main lodge dining room daily from 0730 am to 0900. Dinners served at 1830. Early breakfast and late dinner possible by advance arrangement.

Area Info:

From our patio area, watch eagles, hawks, and various types of bok, and enjoy spectacular views of Cathkin Peak, Champagne Castle, Monks Cowl and Dragons Peak. From here is the best angle to view these mountains, and makes for an Instagramable moment, as the sun sets behind these beautiful peaks. The Sterkspruit River meanders along the flood plain below the lodge, offering crystal pools for hikers to cool off during the hot summer months. This area is steeped in the history of the San and the Nguni people. Wildlife often spotted on the property include owls, hawks, eagles, klipspringer, rhebok, jackal, porcupine, otter, baboon, monkey, and bushpig. Most evenings, we hear the Jackals call from the foothills around the lodge.

If cancelling 7 days before arrival, forfeit 100% of the booking total.
If cancelling 14 days before arrival, forfeit 100% of the deposit.
If cancelling 30 days before arrival, forfeit 50% of the deposit.

Directions:

When arriving at our gate, guests are requested to phone the lodge and we will open the gate. The road to the lodge is 3 km of farm road, dirt and concrete strips. King Shaka International Airport: 1. Use the left 2 lanes to turn left onto Dube Blvd (Toll road) for 2.3 km. 2. Keep right at the fork and merge onto N2 (Toll road) for 2.3 km. 3. Merge onto N2 (Toll road) for 22.0 km. 4. Keep right to stay on N2 for 19 m. 5. Keep right to stay on N2 for 4.5 km. 6. Use the left 2 lanes to take exit 165 to merge onto N3 toward Pietermaritzburg/Johannesburg for 7.7 km. 7. Keep right to stay on N3 (Toll road) for 162 km. 8. Take exit 179 toward Estcourt/Giants Castle for 600 m. 9. Turn left and travel for 29.5 km. 10. Turn left onto R600 and continue for 15.9 km. 11. Turn right and travel 500 m. 12. Turn left and travel 550 m. 13. Take a slight right for 450 m. 14. Turn right and travel 1.2 km. Destination will be at Kukummi Lodge, Rood Nature Reserve Portion 3, Cathkin Park.
