Kosi Bay Resort

Kosi Bay Resort is one of the most fascinating and beautiful pristine lake systems on the African coastline, a get-away-from-it-all coastal paradise.

Accommodation at Kosi Bay Resort:
The lodges are self-catering and simply furnished, but comfortable units. Lodges are serviced daily. All three units are equipped with DSTV.

UGUDU
This 6-bedded lodge is ideal for families.
It offers three bedrooms, three showers, a bathtub, and 3 toilets.
It has a large verandah overlooking the lake where guests can enjoy sundowners, a barbeque or simply relaxing after a day out.

UMDONI
The 5-bedded unit has two bedrooms, two showers, braai facilities and it can be used by groups.

IGOWANE
A 2-bedded lodge has a small yet cozy setting suitable for couples.
It is an open plan unit with a living area, bathroom, two beds and a verandah.
Guests can enjoy an afternoon stroll from the unit that takes them through to Lake Nhlange.

Facilities
- Reception including the curio shop is open from 08:00 - 16:00 Monday - Saturday and 07:00 - 15:00 Sundays.
- The curio shop has basic supplies including maps, bait, ice and soft drinks.
- Ice, cold drinks and bait are available at the Curio Shop.
- Monthly and Annual Licenses are available from the Curio Shop.
- Rhino Club Gold Cards are also available from the reception office.

CELLPHONE RECEPTION
Cellphone reception is poor throughout the resort.

RETRACTABLE DRYING LINE
For your convenience each lodge has been equipped with a retractable drying line, where light items of laundry may be hung.
Please do not hang any washing on the verandah.

BREAKAGES
We request that you report any breakages to the reception office.

BLANKETS
Additional blankets are stored in the wardrobes.
Should you require extras please contact housekeeping or the reception office.

WOOD
Wood is available from the community stalls just outside the main gate.

CHECK OUT
We request you to check out by 10:00 on the day of your departure to afford us sufficient time to prepare chalets for our next guests.
Please keep your checkout receipt safe as it will be requested from you when signing out at the main gate.
Should you require to check out earlier than 07:00, please make arrangements a day before by at least 15:00.

ELECTRICITY
Although our Resort is supplied with Eskom electricity, we also have a back-up generator which supplies electricity during Eskom power disruptions.

COMPLAINTS
Should you have concerns of any nature, we would like to be given an opportunity to address these at the earliest convenience, so please speak to the Hospitality Services Manager at the reception office.

MONKEYS
Feeding monkeys is strictly forbidden.
Do not leave food unattended.
Please keep all the windows and doors to your lodge and zippers on your tents closed thereby avoiding temptation for the monkeys.
Displaying of fruit and food will tempt them to enter your unit.

KEYS
All units are equipped with locks and keys which are obtained upon check-in.
Please ensure that your key is left at the reception office when checking out.
Should you for any reason forget to drop them off during departure, please mail them back to the address printed on each Key Holder.

DRINKING WATER
Our tap water is safe to drink and a filled water bottle is in your refrigerator.

Activities
SAMANGO TRAIL
This trail is a leisure walk within a resort where a number of birds can be spotted and takes visitors through diverse vegetation with swamps, ravine and trees.
Please wear comfortable walking shoes and use protection ticks.

FISHING
The reserve is extremely popular among the angling fraternity.
The majority of fishing takes place from boats as shore angling is only permitted from within the campsite area.
It is essential that fishermen provide their own boats and must obtain a fishing permit.
Fly fishing is becoming more popular among the anglers and â??Tag and Releaseâ? is encouraged.

CAUTION:
Kosi lakes are natural systems which contain large populations of hippo and crocodile.
Fishermen need to be aware of these animals as they move around the system in their boats.
Hippos usually spend the daytime in groups in the water and feed at night on the lush grasslands that surround the lakes.
Potential confrontations may occur with visitors as the hippos move to their grazing grounds at dusk and return to the water at dawn.
Fishermen should be especially cautious when negotiating the narrow channels between lakes at these times. Please refrain from speeding in the channels.

SNORKELLING
The reserve offers a unique snorkelling experience with a magnificent reef situated inside the mouth of the Kosi system.
Access to the mouth is via 4X4 vehicles only, or a walk with a trail guide 12 km is possible.
At low tide one can walk across the estuary mouth to this wonderful snorkelling site which is demarcated as a sanctuary.
The best time to snorkel is at the start of the incoming tide which brings clean sea water.
Shore fishing is popular off the beach or in the estuary. Snorkelling gear is available for hire from the reception office.
Fishing and spear-fishing are not allowed.

Rules and Regulations:
The Nature Conservation Ordinance 15/1974 and the regulations made there under, provide inter alia that it is an OFFENCE to:

- Enter into the Reserve without permission whether this is in the form of official authorization or as bona fide visitor in possession of a reservation deposit or conservation levy fee receipt;
- Drive elsewhere than on authorized roads;
- Introduce into the Reserve any animal, domestic or otherwise; Uproot, pick, damage, destroy, remove any plant in/from the Reserve or be in possession of any part of a plant indigenous to the reserve ( Wood is available for sale outside the main entrance gate);
- Injure, feed or disturb any form of wildlife, or be found in possession of a snare in the reserve;
- Travel in the reserve during times other than those stipulated in the rules and regulations: 06:00 - 18:00 all year round The above gate opening and closing hours will be strictly applied;
- Stay overnight at any place other than in the Resort or a designated site;
- Discard any refuse or article other than placing it in a refuse bin provided for this purpose;
- Travel at a speed of more than 40 km/h on any road in the Reserve and more than 20 km/h in the Resort;
- Taking of photographs for commercial purposes without the authority of Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife; Make a noise between 21:30 and 06:00;
- Feed any species including monkeys (we suggest you keep your windows and doors closed when not in attendance).
- Portable Generators are not permitted.
- Insect electrocutors are illegal.
- Fishing is permissible only in designated areas.
Please Note: in terms of recent legislation all persons operating crafts in these inland waters must be in possession of an appropriate and valid Skippers License / Ticket.
At the discretion of the Reserve Manager, failure to adhere to any of the regulations stated above may lead to expulsion from the Reserve.

Please be advised of the following:

PERMITS
Permits are issued on first come first serve basis.
Guest may book ONE DAY in advance.
Limited Permits are issued for Kosi Mouth, Bhanga Nek, Black Rock, Rocktail Bay and Island Rock.

DOG POINT
Please note, this is a restricted beach and guests are not permitted to visit there.
Should you be found there, you will be liable for a fine.

MOSQUITOES
Kosi Bay is considered a high risk malaria area.
Wear long sleeved shirts and trousers after dusk as this is when mosquitoes are most active.
Consult a pharmacist if you wish to take a prophylactic medication.
If you experience flu-like symptoms after visiting a malaria area, contact your doctor immediately and inform him or her of your recent visit.
Please be aware that Kosi Bay is a high risk malaria area and visitors are advised to take precautions.
Please consult your Doctor or Pharmacist.

STONE FISH
Stone fish is present at Kosi Mouth.
A sting from this is excruciatingly painful and may lead to amputation or even death.

HIPPO AND CROCODILE
Always be vigilant for hippos and crocodiles on the lakes.
Children should always be accompanied by an adult.
When leaving your unit at night use torches.
