Area Info:

Butterworth, officially known as Gcuwa, is a significant commercial and administrative hub located in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa, positioned approximately 110km north of East London. Founded in 1827 as a Wesleyan mission station, it stands as one of the oldest colonial towns in the former Transkei region and serves as a vital gateway to the rugged beauty of the Wild Coast. The town’s economy is primarily driven by its role as a regional service centre for the surrounding rural Xhosa communities, supporting a busy central business district and various manufacturing industries. While Gcuwa faces challenges common to rapidly growing urban centres, it is surrounded by striking natural landscapes, including the dramatic Bawa Falls and the winding Gcuwa River, which offer a stark, scenic contrast to the town’s bustling, industrial atmosphere.

Attractions:

* Butterworth (also known by its Xhosa name, Gcuwa) is one of the oldest towns in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. Located in the heart of the Wild Coast region, it serves as a major commercial centre for the surrounding rural districts. * Bawa Falls Located about 7km from the town centre, this is one of the most popular natural sites in the area. It features an impressive 103m drop into the gorge below and was historically known as a traditional Xhosa place of execution. * Gcuwa River Cascades A series of powerful waterfalls and tumbling cascades is located along the Gcuwa River. The nearby Gcuwa Dam is also a local spot for boating and fishing. * Historical Wesleyan Mission Established in 1827, this was the site around which the town originally developed. Although it was destroyed and rebuilt several times during the Frontier Wars, it remains a foundational part of the town's colonial and religious history. * Cultural Village Tours Butterworth is a gateway to the traditional Xhosa heartland. Many local guides offer tours to nearby villages where visitors can experience authentic Xhosa hospitality, traditional architecture, and local customs. * The Gates A scenic spot roughly 40km from the town that offers rugged, "wild" landscapes typical of the Eastern Cape, popular with hikers and nature photographers. * Collywobbles Vulture Colony Located a bit further afield (near the Mbashe River gorge), this is one of the few places in South Africa where you can see a significant breeding colony of the rare Cape Vulture nesting on sheer cliffs. * Wild Coast Proximity While the town itself is inland, it serves as the primary jumping-off point for the southern Wild Coast resorts, such as Mazeppa Bay and Qolora Mouth, known for their untouched beaches and excellent fishing.
