The estate was proclaimed a private nature reserve in 1995. It is the largest private nature reserve along the entire South African coastline. It extends over 2455 hectares (6066 acres) and stretches 5 km along the Indian Ocean. The reserve is fully fenced along its 15 km perimeter and only accessible via two gated entrances.
Well preserved ancient fish traps and shell middens are situated along the reserve`s coastline and pay testament to our great heritage. The fish traps date back to the Later Stone Age people (Khoi khoi) who roamed the coastline about 2000 years ago.
A walk up Buffelskop (212 m - the highest point on the reserve) offers a magnificent view of the entire coastline, the light house and a vast undulating inland landscape.
Accommodation at Gourikwa Reserve:
The Fisherman houses are secluded 2 bedroom (1 x King bed room and 1 x twin bed room) and 1 and a half bathroom house with a wonderful fireplace and fully stocked kitchenette. Veranda with built-in braai. Ca 70 square meters, brick and mortar with tile roof Terracotta tile flooring. These houses can accommodate 4 guests in total.
One of our fisherman houses can accommodate 6 guests which consists of 3 bedrooms (1 x King bed room and 2 x twin room) and 2 bathrooms. A fireplace and fully stocked kitchenette are also available. Veranda with built in braai. Ca 120 square meters, brick and mortar with tile roof Terracotta tile flooring.
There are 5 identical lodges located within the main centre of the reserve. The lodges are only 40 meters from the high water mark and each of the units have uninterrupted sea views. 2 bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms and with a spacious living room and under cover veranda. Ca 100 square meters. Bathrooms with bath and separate shower. Brick and mortar with sheet roof. Uninterrupted sea views. Fully equipped kitchen. TV with DSTV and coffee trays with guests amenities. Also wifi.
