General Information

Construction of the tar surface between Maclear and Mt Fletcher is now complete.

The road to Rhodes which turns off the Maclear-Mt Fletcher Road (marked on some maps as a scenic route) is in a very bad condition and should not be attempted when wet. The road from Maclear to Rhodes is in poor condition and due to loose stones and 'middelmannetjies', not recommended for cars. Vehicles with higher clearance (like Toyota Ventures) should not experience any difficulty.

The construction of the road between Elliot, Cala, Lady Frere has been completed.

Watch out for speed humps outside and inside Elliot and Ugie. The humps are atrocious and will severely damage a vehicle - even at 60km/hour. Speed traps are common at the entrance to and exits from Maclear, Ugie, Elliot, Indwe, Barkly-East and Dordrecht.

The speed limit in the old Transkei is still 100 km/hour.

Speed traps in the Kei cuttings are common - beware!
