Eshowe is a historic town in Zululand, KwaZulu-Natal, surrounded by indigenous coastal forest and known for its rich Zulu heritage, natural beauty and relaxed small-town atmosphere. It is considered the oldest town in Zululand and provides a convenient base for exploring the surrounding Zululand and North Coast areas. The town has a fascinating history connected to several Zulu kings, including Shaka, Mpande, Cetshwayo and Dinuzulu. King Cetshwayo was born and died in the area, while a Norwegian missionary established a mission station here in 1861. During the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879, Eshowe became a British military headquarters and was besieged by Zulu forces for approximately 10 weeks. Nature lovers can explore the Dlinza Forest, a large indigenous coastal scarp forest known for its birdlife, butterflies, indigenous trees and peaceful walking trails. The Dlinza Forest Aerial Boardwalk allows visitors to experience the forest from above, with a canopy walkway and observation tower offering views over the surrounding forest.
