It seems the fact that owners re-created Dorphuis (Hantamhuis) to reflect it’s Victorian past, only contributes to its universal appeal. The Dorphuis literally transports you to the previous century.
This treasure chest has among others three luxury rooms and six outside rooms (four of these are still original nagmaal rooms). Stepping inside this National Monument, dating from 1860, you’ll find every wall in every room a piece of art.
The most favoured room, undoubtedly, is the Knegtekamer (Slave’s Quarters), furnished completely in traditional style. You’ll have to make do with lamplight. Your comforter in the dark hours of the night is a wonderful “karos” made of Springbok skins, flung nonchalantly across the cosy bed.
Like all the other rooms in Die Dorphuis-complex, Die Stoepkamer, Elsa and the Bridal suite have yellow wood furniture. Even though all the walls are decorated with old family portraits of serious-looking Calvinianers, each room still has its own unique features to reminisce over.
Die Stoepkamer is a luxury suite with private lounge and en-suite bathroom. Elsa has a lounge and a fireplace. The Bridal suite’s bath appears to be its greatest charm.
The four Nagmaalkamers (outside rooms), the Buitekamer, the Waskamer or Lizzie and Piet Links offers you two modern flats with cane furniture and own braai facilities.
An unforgettable Hantam breakfast and traditional dinners are offered just around the corner and down the street at the Hantam Huis.
Extras in the Rooms:
Your bed is pre-heated by an electric blanket. (A wonderful necessity during winter nights).
Pepper tree twigs hanging over the old Dover stove, attempt to keep away the flies. (A wonderful necessity during summer days).
The colourful kitchen, with milk, coffee and rusks provided, make you feel domesticated.
Firewood is available on request for braais. Light dinners (soup, homemade bread, butter, jams and braaipacks) can be arranged.
We also cater for special diets or religious orientated eating habits.
Every room now has it’s own television, except for the Knegtekamer where it wouldn’t just seem out of place, it would also amount to sin.
- We deduct 25% admin fee for cancellation more than 30 days before the arrival date.
- Cancellation effect between 30 to 21 days before date of arrival will attract a charge of 50% of the total fee.
- Cancellations effected less than 21 days before arrival will attract a charge of 100% of the total fee.
From Gauteng in the north, you can choose one of two routes.
Route one would be via Upington over Brandvlei to Calvinia. The other route leads via Kimberley through Carnarvon and Williston, a distance of some 1200 kilometers.
From the south you leave the N7 at Van Rhynsdorp and ascend the escarpment through the magnificent Van Rhyn's Pass to the floral kingdom of the Hantam.
Another route consists of a breakaway from the N1 at Matjiesfontein, through Verlatekloof, Sutherland, via Middelpost to Calvinia.
For the very brave, through the Ceres-Karoo on the R355, which is the longest distance between two neighbouring towns, i.e. Ceres and Calvinia - a distance of about 250 kilometers.
