Richards Bay, a town in KwaZulu-Natal, is situated on a 30 square kilometre lagoon of the Mhlatuze River. It boasts one of the country’s largest harbours and has the deepest natural harbour in the Southern hemisphere. Construction work began in 1972 and on 1 April 1976, the new harbour was opened. Over time, this resulted in the small fishing town changing into an industrial city.
