* Glen Austin is a lovely “green lung” between Johannesburg and Pretoria. While it has a quiet, rural feel, there’s actually quite a bit to see and do right on your doorstep (or just a short drive away).
* Glen Austin Bird Sanctuary: This is the local crown jewel. It’s a protected wetland area famous for its birdlife (nearly 200 species) and the endangered African Giant Bullfrog. It’s not a commercialised park, so it’s perfect for a quiet, authentic nature walk.
* Lory Park Animal and Owl Sanctuary: Located just next door in President Park, this “boutique zoo” is highly rated. It’s much more intimate than a major zoo, allowing you to get quite close to the animals.
* Horse Riding: Because the area has many agricultural holdings, there are several stables nearby offering outrides through the local trails.
* Nizamiye Mosque: This is an absolute must-see. It’s the largest mosque complex in the Southern Hemisphere, modelled after the 16th-century Ottoman Selimiye Mosque. Even if you aren’t religious, the architecture and the Turkish bazaar/restaurant inside are incredible.
* South African Lipizzaners: Based in nearby Kyalami, these world-famous white dancing horses perform most Sunday mornings. It’s a very unique South African heritage experience.
* Louis Dior Restaurant (Louisville Resort): A local favourite on Alsatian Road for a bit of “country luxury.” They serve great steaks and even have traditional South African options like Mogodu (tripe).
* The Fat Zebra: A popular, trendy spot nearby for excellent coffee and a solid breakfast or lunch.
* Blue Feather Fine Dining: If you’re looking for something a bit more upscale, this spot offers a lovely bistro atmosphere with a great outdoor boma area.
* Mall of Africa: Just a 10-minute drive away, this is the largest single-phase mall in Africa. If you need serious retail therapy or a massive variety of restaurants, this is the place.
* Gallagher Convention Centre: One of the country’s biggest event venues; check their calendar as they often host massive expos and trade shows.
