Cathkin Cottage Activities:
There is much to do in this area. We have a vulture restaurant and as a guest of Cathkin Cottage you have the benefit of being able to book the Vulture Hide (R600.00 per day) and many hikes, this all in the estate. There is a tree canopy tour, horse riding, various sporting facilities, extreme sporting, mountain biking and outdoor scooters, helicopter flips, hot air ballooning, fishing and swimming.
One can canoe, go to the spa (there are many in the area), play putt putt or golf, or laze around the pool and read. In truth there is no reason to be bored! At the very least you can go to the chocolate shop and enjoy their novel approach to coffee and chocolate, enjoy a slice of homemade Honey Cheesecake at Scrumpy Jacks or view antiques at Sandra Lemmers' farm, also feasting on the delightful artworks of local artist Steve Bull.

Clothing & Accessories:
In winter you may want to bring warm clothing for the evenings and early mornings - generally the days warm up quite nicely. Evening temperatures are generally around 3 degrees centigrade. In summer you will need cool clothing for the very hot days, your costume is a must. We often have afternoon thundershowers, and when it is misty you may require a light jersey or pullover. Sunhat, sun cream, a hiking stick and hiking boots are a must for this area. A small daypack will help you carry your water and snacks whilst hiking. A raincoat and umbrella will ensure that you can still continue with your activities outdoors even if it rains! Europeans are good at that, South Africans still need to learn not to be demotivated by poor weather.
Most establishments are fairly casual, although the hotels prefer smart casual for evening dress (no jeans) for dinner.
Health & Climate:
The weather is good in this region. Typical Summer rain fall with hot days, whilst winter is generally mild to warm and if a cold front comes through we experience snowfall and cold. One needs to always bring a thin pullover as well as sun hat and such, since often times the weather can change dramatically due to the mountainous region. Winter is generally warmer here than it is in the Highveld (e.g. Johannesburg).
My stay at Cathkin Cottage was very enjoyable. The room is comfortable, the lounge and dining area beautifully furnished and being on the Drakensberg Sun Estate, very safe. This is the perfect place to stay if one needs tranquility and silence. Thank you to Leila Dodds who made us feel very welcome.
