Gordon’s Bay is a charming coastal town nestled in a picturesque setting at the foot of the Hottentots Holland Mountains, on the eastern edge of False Bay. It is the smallest of the three towns in the Helderberg region and is known for its relaxed, small-town atmosphere, which provides a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of city life, despite being only a short drive from central Cape Town. The town’s location offers a distinct Mediterranean feel and spectacular views across the bay, particularly at sunset when the sky lights up with vibrant colours. The town’s history dates back to the 17th century when it was known as “Vissersbaai” (Fisherman’s Bay) for its abundance of fish. It was later renamed after Colonel Robert Jacob Gordon, a Dutch explorer and soldier. Today, Gordon’s Bay boasts two harbours: a quaint old harbour and the modern Harbour Island, a waterfront development with a marina, restaurants, and a hotel. The town is also a popular destination for water sports and is home to Bikini Beach, a secluded and sheltered cove that has been awarded Blue Flag status for its cleanliness and safety. Beyond its beaches and harbours, Gordon’s Bay is surrounded by natural beauty and offers a variety of outdoor activities. Visitors can enjoy scenic drives along Clarence Drive, which is renowned as one of the most beautiful coastal roads in the world.
