Activities:

Barry House on Riverton is one of the few places where guests may be fortunate to witness a mare give birth. From August to mid-November is foaling season. Our guests are welcome to leave a cell no to receive a wake up call should a mare decide to foal during their stay. They usually foal between midnight and 5am. Barry House is conveniently situated adjacent to the maternity paddock and foaling units.

Guests are also welcome to walk around the farm or meander through the forest down to the Breede River for a spot of fishing or swimming. Young children must be accompanied.

The garden is home to Cape Sugarbirds, Finches, Wagtails, Robins, African Hoop -hoos etc. A walk around the farm will delight you with flocks of Ibises, Sacred Ibises, Guinea Fowl, Egyptian Geese, Herons, Egrets, Hadidas etc. Answer the Fish Eagles call and stroll down to the river to find the flock of rare Darter birds (Latin name Anhinga rufa), all 3 species of Kingfishers, ducks, geese, etc. Riverton is also home to a breeding pair of Blue Cranes that are not usually found in this area. There is a Sasol Birds of Southern Africa field guide in the sitting room of Barry House, but we recommend that you come armed with your Roberts or Newman's.

Clothing and Accessories:

Walking shoes and binoculars. Bring a warm jacket should you be visiting during foaling season as the night's can get chilly.

Health and Climate:

Our area enjoys a healthy dry climate with only 180 to 200 mm of rainfall per annum. The farm is kept lush, thanks to an irrigation system that brings water from the huge Brandvlei dam. Whilst our winter days are generally sunny, the nights can get chilly.
