Area Info:

Calvinia lies in one of South Africa’s largest provinces, the Northern Cape. This little Karoo town sits about halfway between Cape Town and Upington. In Calvinia, you can allow yourself to be “transported” to the past without being deprived of all the modern comforts. Relax in the peace, where the past and present are intertwined.

Attractions:

* Calvinia may be a quiet Karoo town, but it’s packed with quirky landmarks and natural beauty.
* The Giant Post Box A must-visit for a quick photo op! This 6-meter-tall post box was originally a water tower. If you post a letter here, it gets a special hand-stamped flower postmark to commemorate the local wildflowers.
* Calvinia Museum Housed in an old Art Deco synagogue, this museum is wonderfully eccentric. You’ll find everything from a four-legged ostrich to a “black wedding dress” and a massive collection of vintage farming equipment.
* Akkerendam Nature Reserve Just north of town, this reserve offers beautiful hiking trails at the foot of the Hantam Mountains. It’s a great spot for bird watching (look out for the rare Cinnamon-breasted Warbler) or seeing the unique Sterboom (star tree).
* Hantam Vleisfees (Meat Festival) If you’re visiting during the last weekend of August, you’ll hit the town’s biggest event. It’s a massive celebration of Karoo lamb and culture. Just be sure to book your accommodation well in advance!
* Architectural Gems Take a stroll to see the Dutch Reformed Church (an impressive neo-Gothic building) and Hantam Huis, one of the oldest original Cape Dutch houses in the area, dating back to 1854.
* Seasonal Wildflowers From mid-August to September, the surrounding plains transform into a carpet of orange, yellow, and white. The Hantam National Botanical Garden (just a short drive from Nieuwoudtville) is the best place to see the world-renowned geophytes. * Oorlogskloof Rameron Pigeon Trail
* Williston Mall
* Hantam Huis Restaurant
