The gardens were only officially founded in 1982 as a botanical garden, but there is evidence that the area was popular for picnics and hikes as far back as the early 1800s.<\/p>\n

Walter Sisulu has been ranked as the 2nd best botanical garden in the world on the Huffington Post’s list. This was the verdict of experts consisting of horticulturists and administrators of similar venues around the world.<\/p>\n

Spanning over 300 hectares, the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens are a combination of landscaped and natural veld. Located in Roodepoort in Gauteng, the botanical gardens contain 600 naturally occurring plant species, 220 bird species and a wide variety of small reptiles and mammals, including jackals and antelope.<\/p>\n

A breeding pair of majestic Verreaux’s Eagles nest on the cliffs alongside the waterfall. The Garden is home to an abundance of wildlife with over 220 birds species recorded on site.<\/p>\n

The natural vegetation of the area is known as the ‘Rocky Highveld Grassland’ and consists of a mosaic of grassland and savanna, with dense bush in kloofs and along streams.<\/p>\n
