It differs from other vultures in that its head is fully feathered.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_419\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.places.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Lammergeier.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-419\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-419\" src=\"http:\/\/www.places.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Lammergeier-300x286.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"286\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.places.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Lammergeier-300x286.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.places.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Lammergeier.jpg 416w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-419\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bearded Vulture or Lammergeier<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Like other vultures it is a scavenger, feeding mostly from carcasses of dead animals, but usually disdains the rotting meat and lives on a diet that is 90% bone marrow. \u00a0The Lammergeier can swallow whole bones up to the size of a lamb&#8217;s femur and its powerful digestive system quickly dissolves even large pieces.<\/p>\n<p>The Lammergeier has learned to crack bones too large to be swallowed by carrying them up to a height and then dropping them onto rocks below, smashing them into smaller pieces and exposing the nutritious marrow.<\/p>\n<p>This learned skill requires extensive practice by immature birds and takes up to seven years to master.<\/p>\n<p>Lammergeiers are rare. These birds are restricted to the highlands of <a href=\"http:\/\/lesotho.places.co.za\/lesotho.html\">Lesotho<\/a> and immediately adjacent areas of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.places.co.za\/html\/drakensberg_park.html\" target=\"_blank\">Drakensberg<\/a> mountains.<\/p>\n<p>Because of the Bearded Vultures&#8217; small and declining population size, range contraction and the susceptibility to several threats in Lesotho and South Africa, it has been classified as &#8220;endangered&#8221; in the Southern African Red Data Book.<\/p>\n<p>For more info see <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bearded_Vulture\" target=\"_blank\">Wikipedia.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Bearded Vulture (Gypaetus barbatus), also known as the Lammergeier, is a large solitary bird that inhabits mainly mountainous regions.
