“Uxolo” is a Xhosa word, meaning “peace”, which is a very appropriate word to describe both the Uxolo Guest House and the area, which is rich in the history involving the struggle for freedom in our country.  During 1963, Nelson Mandela used the house across the street from Uxolo from where he used to visit friends in the neighbourhood.  His wife, Winnie Mandela, had her wedding dress made in one of the houses in our street.  Helen Joseph, an important activist in the struggle against apartheid, lived around the corner in Fanny Street, where she was also under house arrest from 1962 until 1985.  These are just some of the stories recorded in ‘The Long Road to Freedom” and “Jewish Memories of Mandela”.
