The charming village of Nieu Bethesda overlooked by the famous Compassberg peak, is so secluded that the lack of development in the area left the little town with a rare historical integrity dating back to more than 130 years ago when the town was first established. The town is located approximately 50 km from Graaff Reinet and was founded in 1875 as a church town.
World renowned for being home to the late Helen Martins’ extraordinary “Owl House”, it has also become a popular retreat for artists, writers or those wishing to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Craft shops and galleries, potteries and sculpture gardens are scattered throughout the town, and visitors can also enjoy bushman paintings, fossils, climbing, hiking, bird-watching, mountain-biking, horse-riding, game-viewing, star-gazing or stoep-sitting (yes, it’s a thing in the Karoo).
The area is also a nature lovers paradise. Semi-desert climate means it’s home to some of the largest variety of succulents in the world, as well as various bird species, reptiles and mammals.
Although this quaint little town offers everything from relaxation, history, art and adventure, nowhere does the sky unfold as cleanly and as beautifully as it does in Nieu Bethesda. If you’re looking for a spectacular and breathtaking stargazing experience, this is where the skies light up. Come and find your haven.
The top attractions to visit in Nieu-Bethesda are: The Owl House; Kitching Fossil Exploration Centre; First People Centre at The Bethesda Art Centre; Nieu Bethesda Church; Bushman Heritage Museum
