Set in the heart of the majestic Southern Drakensberg, Sani Lodge Backpackers offers a wide variety of outdoor activities, hearty meals, and well-deserved relaxation.

We are one of the oldest backpackers in the country, welcoming guests from around the world for over 30 years. In addition, we are leaders in the field of responsible and sustainable tourism. This has gained us global recognition for our ethical practices in social upliftment as well as nature conservation. At Sani Lodge Backpackers we believe we cater towards the independent traveler with a conscience.

Our cosy common room area provides a laid-back environment in which to connect with fellow adventurers. It has been the starting point of many a great story, berg exploration and friendship. For your convenience and in the interest of being sociable, the communal kitchen adjoins this common room area. With stunning views, a wood-burning fireplace and floor to ceiling information on the surrounding area, our common room is the heart of Sani Lodge Backpackers. Whether you’d rather catch a tan next to the pool, kick back with a something interesting from our book exchange, or simply sip a cold beer by the braai whilst the sun sets on another stunning African day, we are the perfect setting.

Attractions:

We offer guided overnight hikes leaving from our doorstep within the Drakensberg World Heritage Site National Park. Let yourself be lulled off to sleep by the waterfall flowing over your caves entrance when you spend the night in a natural overhang.

Cancellation Policy:

-  If cancelling 14 days before arrival, forfeit 100% of the booking total.
-  If cancelling 21 days before arrival, forfeit 50% of the deposit.
-  If cancelling 30 days before arrival, forfeit 10% of the deposit.

Terms and Conditions

ADMISSION POLICY FOR ALL GUESTS 1) CARDHOLDER’S ID / PASSPORT IS REQUIRED AT CHECK IN. 2) THE CREDIT CARD USED FOR THE ONLINE PAYMENT MUST BE PRESENT AT CHECK-IN. 3) Guests are expected to comply with our Covid safety rules of wearing face masks and social distancing in public spaces. 4) Guests are liable for full account of period booked regardless of late arrival or early checkout. 5) Accommodation for one day extends from 14.00 hrs on any calendar day of the booked period which shall expire at 10.00 hrs on the following day. Persons staying in the room after 10am on day of departure will be charged for an extra night. 6) No smoking inside any of the buildings. Offenders will be fined R500 towards deep cleaning of rooms. 7) No pets allowed. 8) No music from car radios or otherwise to be played. 9) No visitors to guests staying are allowed on the property. 10) The right is reserved to order any guest off the premises who renders himself guilty of violating any of the general rules regarding Covid policy, accommodation and utilization of facilities or of indecent behaviour or any other form of misconduct, without a refund on prepaid accommodation. 11) Any breakage or damage to contents of accommodation and buildings and contents elsewhere on property will be charged at replacement value. 12) No noise after 9.30pm.

Directions:

Take the N3 to 20kms north of Pietermaritzburg then turn on to the R617 which will take you through Boston and Bulwer ( please drive slowly due to bad potholes from Boston onwards) and then Underberg. There turn right to Himeville and 4 kms past the town you will turn left on to the Sani Pass road. We are situated 10.5kms down this road on the left hand side. NOTE: DO not take the Nottingham road as this is a bad gravel road without cellphone comms and it will take you much longer to reach us this way.
