Kosi Bay is the main town in the Maputaland region in northern KwaZulu Natal. It is approximately 300km from Richards Bay and 80km from Sodwana. Kosi Bay is a misnomer as the town is 25km away from the ocean.

The 11 000 ha Kosi Bay Nature Reserve is a tropical paradise of crystal-clear blue water and marshland, raffia, wild date and palm, mangrove swamp and sycamore fig forest that combine to provide a home for approximately 250 species of bird.
