Area Info:

There are two variations to the story of how Jacobsbaai was established.

Version 1 - Jacobsbaai was founded as a small town on the farmland registered as No 109 Jacobsbaai. Apparently the Frenchman Jacques Titius used to frequent the shores of Jacobsbaai as a colonial trader in the West Coast.

Version 2 - The English king entrusted the piece of land to a local known as ‘Jacob’  Tietiesbaai who is also named after the Frenchman Jacques Titius.  You will find that one of the streets in Jacobsbaai has been named after Titius.  From the early 1800’s, a company called Stefan Bros, were conducting trade between the West Coast and Cape Town. Very often farmers became indebted to them and they would take 99 year leases on some farm next to the coast as payment. This meant that they could refuse landing rights to any other traders that wanted to trade on these shores.  Jacobs Bay was one of South Africa’s whaling stations in the days when whaling was still permitted.

During the Second World War watch towers were build all along the coast to keep guard for possible invasion by German U-boats. Despite this, a well known spy, Robbie Leibrandt, was dropped off by a U-boat near Yzerfontein. The SA Defense Force used similar  towers, remnants of which can still be seen at Jacobs bay. Around 1990, an employee at the deeds offices did a search and saw that the 99 year lease for the land at Jakobsbaai had expired, and that the land had once again  become available. A property developer, Kuron Holdings, was brought in and the town was started.  The rest is history and the town has been growing steadily ever since and has become quite the “Destination”

Clothing and Accessories:
Bring own beach towels.
Health and Climate:

Always bring a warm coat or jeans, even in summer, as the West Coast can treat you to four seasons in one day.
This is a very safe area to go for walks, cycle etc. However, as the little town was established on a farm on the coast, the normal creepy crawlies are to be found such as snakes, scorpions etc. So care should be taken when walking in the area outside of the Guest house.
