Map of the Free State

>> Free State Accommodation    Travel Guide   City Guide

The Free State with its rolling hills, wide golden plains, impressive sandstone mountains and almost 340 days of sunshine per year, is a haven for the outdoor enthusiast. And since the main route between Johannesburg and Cape Town (N1) crosses the Free State it offers beautiful scenery and alternative experiences for the off-the-beaten-track traveler.

Share in the cultural heritage of the Free State by visiting museums in towns and cities, battlefields of the Basotho wars, the Anglo-Boer war and Voortrekker skirmishes, San rock art found in the spectacular sandstone cliffs and ancient ruins of tribes that previously inhabited the area.
