KwaZulu Natal Game Reserves and Lodges
>> Accommodation   Travel Guide   Map

KwaZulu-Natal`s game parks and the Greater St Lucia Lake World Heritage Site lie spread across Zululand on the subtropical coastal plain and on the upper reaches of some of its larger rivers.

An extensive network of Nature Reserves and Game Parks ensure abundant flora and fauna and absolute delight for the outdoor-loving traveller. These sanctuaries give refuge to several hundred bird species - 60% of South Africa's total - in addition to many antelope variants as well as the Big Five - lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino - in the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve. Game Lodges and Reserves in KwaZulu Natal:
Hluhluwe Area
Set in the heart of Zululand, the area surrounding Hlhuhluwe not only host the oldest game reserve in Africa - the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Park - but also a number of private game reserves and lodges.
Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Park was established in 1895 with game viewing as prime attraction. An exellent road infrastucture and viewing hides overlooking pans and waterholes enable visitors to see animals at close range.

Ithala Game Reserve Area
The magnificent Ithala reserve, tumbling from the heights of the Ngotshe Mountains a thousand meters down into a deep valley revealing the world`s oldest rock formations, is a game viewers paradise.
Situated in the rugged, mountainous thornveld of northern KwaZulu-Natal, the reserve`s multitude of habitats host a spectacular array of wildlife species.

Mkuze Area
Mkhuze Game Reserve constitutes the north western spur of the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park and is renowned as a mecca for bird lovers with more than 420 bird species on record. A number of private Lodges is found in the surrounding area.

Ndumo Game Reserve
Situated near the Tembe Elephant Park, is best known for its magnificent bird life and with game species such as nyala, bushbuck, impala, red duiker, suni, black and white rhino, hippopotamus and a large population of crocodiles, Ndumo is a most rewarding area to view wildlife with its wetlands and pans, thick bush and savanna and extensive forests.
Pongola Area
Pongola Game Reserve is a co-operative conservation project between private landowners, tribal communities and government conservation services, and aims to form the heart of a large ecological and socio-economically viable "Big Five" reserve.

Tembe Elephant Park
This remote park, deep in an area of sand forests, pans and wetlands in northern Tongaland, lies on the border between KwaZulu-Natal and Mozambique. Accommodation is available at Tembe Elephant Lodge.

Kosi Bay Nature Reserve
The Reserve lies on the coast in the northern part of KwaZulu-Natal and is home to a large variety of birds and animals including hippos and crocs.

Lake Sibaya
Lake Sibaya has a surface area of 77 square kilometres and an average depth of 13 m. The lake was previously connected to the sea and with the closure of the estuary, numerous invertebrates and vertebrates were trapped in a fresh water enviroment.
Phinda Private Game Reserve
The plains of Phinda are the roaming grounds of buffalo, white rhino, elephant, giraffe, impala, zebra and wildebeest. Predators such as lion, leopard, cheetah and hyena wait their turn in the shadows. In pools and lakes, hippo lounge the day away, while along the Mzinene River, African Elephant and impala wander past.

Sodwana Bay
Renowned for its sport fishing, scuba diving and snorkeling, Sodwana is situated on the coast within the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park.

False Bay Park
