Game Lodges and Reserves in the North West Away from the routine hustle and bustle of life, the North West is an escape route to the real Africa. Nature has blessed this province with breathtaking scenic beauty, rolling fields of maize, golden sunflowers and vast plains of African bushveld. Two important game reserves, the Pilanesberg National Park and Madikwe Game Reserve, are located in the province, the former adjacent to Sun City, a spectacular recreational, entertainment and gambling resort. Madikwe, a malaria-free reserve covering a vast area of 75,000 hectares, boasts the Big Five and the second largest population of elephants in South Africa. ![]() Madikwe Game Reserve Madikwe is regarded as one of the finest conservation areas in Africa, offering all the major species, including lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, both white and black rhino along with almost all the plains antelope species. A special feature of Madikwe lies in its unique location, a transition zone on the edges of the Kalahari, where a number of rare species occur naturally. Over 350 species of birds have been recorded at Madikwe including many interesting raptors. Pilanesberg Game Reserve The Pilanesberg National Park hosts some 10 000 head including the "Big Five", giraffe, hippo, kudu, eland, sable, gemsbok, red hartebeest, tsessebe, waterbuck, warthog, cheetah, leopard, and the rare brown hyaena. It is one of the few Southern African parks that contain a near-complete assembly of the area's original fauna. Some smaller private game lodges can also be found in the Brits area. |
