The Nelson Mandela Museum near Umtata offers visitors an inspiring journey through the life of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. Known affectionately as 'Madiba', he is loved and respected worldwide for his tireless energy to bring about a better life for all.

Mandela has insisted that the Museum should not be a tribute dedicated to him, but should rather serve as a catalyst and springboard for the upliftment and development of the local community.

Three historical sites form part of the project that is the culmination of an idea born in 1996. The sites are at Mvezo, near Coffee Bay, where Mandela was born; the village of Qunu about 25km outside Umtata and the Bunga Building on Nelson Mandela Drive in Umtata where the story of the life and times of one of South Africa's greatest leaders is depicted.

Special visiting packages can be organised by the museum's tour guides to Mvezo where visitors will find an open-air museum, the ruins of his primary school, a famous sliding rock where he used to play and an old stone church where he was baptised.

In Qunu, the village where Mandela grew up, a Youth and Heritage Centre is being built and should be completed by October 2003.

The Bunga Building was partly renovated for the purpose of housing an exhibition of many gifts. Priceless artefacts from all over the world such as a camel saddle from Egypt and other awards given to Mandela during his presidency can be found here.
