Knysna National Lake Area

The 15 000 ha Knysna Lagoon, dominated by the rocky bastions of the picturesque Knysna Heads, is an area of unsurpassed beauty and character. Tales of shipwrecks, gold, ivory and unlimited timber supplies lured many to this peaceful stretch of water in the early days.

Today the lagoon area still attracts people -but now they come to enjoy watersports, such as sailing, cruising, boardsailing and angling.

This playground is the country's second national lake area (Wilderness National Park is the first), and through careful management, such as zoning ecologically sensitive areas for specific uses, the National Parks Board aims to maintain a healthy balance between conservation and recreation.

The lagoon, characterised by sandbanks, salt marshes and reed beds, teems with life, providing food for countless organisms. One of the most peculiar and interesting creatures to be found here is the endangered Knysna seahorse (Hippocampl~s capensis)

Although no tourism facilities exist within the lagoon area.
