Game reserves of the Northern Cape
>>> Travel Guide    Accommodation    Map

The Northern Cape is a large, dry region of fluctuating temperatures and varying topographies. As the most arid part of South Africa it offers the visitor an experience that is not elsewhere available. It is noted for its San rock art, diamond diggings and large nature reserves.

The Kalahari National Park (now transformed into the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park stretching into Botswana) comprises two million-hectares of sparsely vegetated, red sand dunes and dry riverbeds.
The reserve is a sanctuary for antelope, gemsbok, springbok, blue wildebeest, red hartebeest, eland, lion, leopard, cheetah and smaller game. One of Africa's last true game reserves, the size of the Park allows for massive migration of different species.

Within the Augrabies Falls National Park the Orange River is at its most impressive as it thunders its way through a ravine and into a pool walled by sheer granite. This arid piece of lunar landscape-like land, awesome and strikingly beautiful, offers the visitor over 15 000 ha of unique riverine ecosystems to explore.
Various animals and indigenous trees can be seen. Giraffe, klipspringer and other game are frequently seen while game driving in the Park.

Twisted and faulted, seared by a blistering sun, the 160 000ha or crenellated lava mountains and sandy plains of the Richtersveld National Park form southern Africa’s largest mountain desert park. The rugged Richtersveld is a botanist’s living laboratory, nurturing some 30% of all South Africa’s succulent plant species.
The home of the quiver tree, the bastard quiver tree, the "halfmens" and "eight-day" or "miracle grass", the Richtersveld is one of the world’s most precious and fragile ecosystems

The Vaalbos National Park is situated close to the town of Barkly West on the road from Kimberley to Postmasburg. The park is inhabited by a large variety of birds and mammals, including black and white rhino.

From Postmasburg follow the signs to the Witsand Nature Reserve, with its striking white sand dunes. At the area around Brulsand, a weird roaring noise is created when the sand is disturbed. The park is known for its birdlife.

Situated on the edge of the Kalahari desert, Tswalu Private Desert Reserve is the largest privately owned game reserve is South Africa.
Covering a malaria free area of over 100,000 hectares of harsh thorn bush, immense skies, monumental mountains and red rolling sand dunes, Tswalu is the Africa of a thousand years ago.
Tswalu has 40 different species of animals and over 250 different species of birds.
