One of the most fascinating features of the Karoo trails is the unique characteristics of each trail. For example, the farm Toekoms is steeped in the history of the Anglo-Boer War and remnants of sandbags from behind which the troops could either spy or bombard the enemy, can be seen on the route.
The ruins of an old homestead and mall reveal interesting facts about the architecture and materials used by the pioneers It is quite pleasant to drive in the riverbed and view the huge Namaqua Fig trees clinging to the rock surface. The area is picturesque.
On the farm Lokenburg, the visitor is taken back in history to the time when everything was done by hand or animal power. The route along the escarpment is beautiful and bushman paintings can be viewed. There are various routes on this farm.
Wildlife and Vegetation
The Hantam 4x4 trails are a must during spring when thick carpets of Namaqualand flowers adorn the countryside.
The area is classified as lowland succulent Karoo. Yet the difference in vegetation on the two farms is a pleasant surprise. Small game may be seen and consists of Cape hares, black-backed jackal, steenbok, duikers and klipspringers.
