The capital city and geographical hub of the world renowned Garden Route, it is situated in a picturesque environment on a coastal plateau between the Outeniqua Mountain Range and the Indian Ocean, causing the town and surrounding area to have a temperate climate throughout the year.

For instance, there is the Drostdy, a graceful old building that houses a museum, the George Museum itself, the Old Slave Tree, a 186 year old oak tree that has an iron chain embedded in its trunk, the St Peter and St Paul Church, the oldest existing Roman Catholic church in South Africa, the St Mark's Cathedral - one of the smallest cathedrals in South Africa.

And do not forget the beaches at the secluded Victoria Bay - which is renowned for surfing, especially during winter months - and Herold's Bay, a small, sheltered holiday resort with large tidal pools, safe bathing and good angling opportunities.

As for sport; George has 2 of the top 10 golf courses in South Africa and also offers flying, gliding, horse riding, squash, tennis and a variety of hiking trails and mountain biking.
