Ndumo Hutted Camp

Average Guest Rating:

Ndumo Game Reserve is perhaps best known for its magnificent bird life with the highest bird count in South Africa, some 430 species.

Situated near the Tembe Elephant Park on the Mozambique border, with the Usuthu River forming its northern boundary and the Pongola River flowing through to its confluence with Usutu, Ndumo boasts many beautiful pans set about with yellow fever trees and extensive wetlands and reedbeds.

This varied habitat hosts an astonishing range of aquatic birdlife such as black egret, pygmy geese, flocks of pelicans and flamingos. The prolific birdlife includes many tropical East African forms at the southern limit of their range.

Special ticks for birders include Pell's fishing owl, the broadbill, and southern banded snake eagle.

With game species such as nyala, bushbuck, impala, red duiker, suni, black and white rhino, hippopotamus and a very large population of crocodiles Ndumo is a most rewarding area to view wildlife with its wetlands and pans, thick bush and savannah and extensive forests.

Ndumo is of particular interest to entomologists with a very interesting array of insects including 66 recorded species of mosquito.

Visitors may drive through certain areas of the reserve in their own cars, or participate in landrover tours to interesting areas in the company of a tour guide.

Depending on the demand, morning and afternoon tours are conducted and arrangements to participate in these tours are made at the reception office.

For the more energetic, day walks in the reserve may be taken in the company of a guide and, here too, arrangements to participate in these walks should be made at the reception office the day before the intended walk.

Please ensure you have cash to pay for activities - about R100 / activity/ adult.

The camp is equipped with mains electricity.

There is laundry facilities available in the camp.

There is no shop in the reserve but there is a well stocked trading store 2 kms from the reserve gate. Reception sells beer, wine, cooldrinks, sweets and curios.

Ndumo is in a malaria area and special precautions are necessary.

Musband an I only stayed two nights in Ndumo and wished we had stayed longer. The bungalows are very nice and we saw a lot of animals in the park. Some roads inside the park were a bit difficult but the road to Ndumo was better than expected. A very nice experience.

Chalets delightful, clean and tidy. They would be superb if each chalet had a loo and basin. Bongani is an excellent guide for birders - knowledgeable, helpful, patient, friendly and a great asset to Ndumo. Walked 3 times with him as a guide.( His land cruiser was in for repairs, fortunately for us) Office staff friendly but fairly incompetent and inexperienced, apart from Chris. Difficult to run the office efficiently because lines appear to be down often and staff have no idea who/ when visitors are arriving. Please stress, underline in bold in your communication to prospective guests the need to take cash to pay for walks and tips. It would help too if the price of game drives and walks were listed in your confirmation letter so that sufficient funds could accompany each guest. We had to pool our resources because unable to use our credit cards. Only 4 chalets and 2 campsites were occupied while we were there ( total of 12 people). If the camp were full, I hate to think how busy the ablution block would be. Four loos, 2 showers and 2 baths in the Ladies is grossly underspec for a full house of a possible 50 people. The men's ablution block has only 2 loos. The mind boggles at the queues which must arise. Loved the Ezulweni Hide but wish there were more hides and access roads to other parts of Nyamithi Pan. Access to Banzi Dam would be a plus too. Of greatest concern is the land invasion on the western side of the Pongola River. The devastation caused last week by the felling of huge stunningly beautiful trees by the land invaders is heartbreaking. A solution needs to be found soon that is a win-win for both parties, or I fear for the future of this magnificent part of our country which deserves to be saved for future generations.
