The adjoining Umfolozi and Hluhluwe game reserves, (the most long-established on the continent) host "The Big Five" (elephant, rhino, lion, leopard, and buffalo) but are perhaps best known for the part they played in preventing the total extinction of Africa's rhino population. Isandlwana is situated in the scenic Midlands of KwaZulu Natal just one and a half hours from Ladysmith and three and a half hours by road from the coastal resort of Durban, or four and a ahalf hours from Johannesburg.

This was a great place to stay, nothing was too much trouble and we were well looked after. The lodge is beautifully appointed and has stunning views from the public rooms and bedrooms. Rob Gerrard the resident historian brought the battles of Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift to life for us. Plenty of time needs to be allowed for the journey to the lodge as the surrounding roads are poor and care needs to be taken. We would thoroughly recommend this lodge.
