The heady rhythm of the Zulu drums fills the air as the dancers intricately pace out the tale of an ancient culture....the chief arises, and all are hushed under the hot African sun as he begins to speak...it is breathtaking...it is Kwabhekithunga
Kwabhekithunga was not built as a commercial enterprise. It is a home - a very special home - the tribal home of Mbhangcuza (Thomas) Fakude and his family; an Umuzi (Zulu Village) true to Zulu Culture and traditions that span centuries.
The Fakude and other families earn their living making traditional Zulu handcrafts, basketware, carvings, beadwork, game skins and traditional weapons can be seen and bought at the centre at wholesale prices.
Rooms Overnight accommodation is available in traditional zulu "beehive" style huts, fitted with electricity, toilets and ensuite showers for your comfort.
Catering, licenced bar and swimming pool facilities compliment the relaxed and informal environment, with hiking trails offering game viewing as well as prolific bird life.
Activities The Zulu cultural program consists of a guided tour, where Chief Thomas will meet you with a Zulu handshake.
The importance of the kraal, social structure, traditional dress, regalia, crops and food, hut building and the role of women and children are all explained.
Ancestral spirits play an important role in Zulu culture, with the Sangoma, holding a revered position in Zulu society.
Awe struck, you will witness the mystery of generations-old mystical practices as the Sangoma demonstrates her ability.
While you are taking in the ancient lore, quench your thirst by sipping traditional Zulu beer, freshly made by Thomas's wife, from a proper Zulu drinking gourd.
To celebrate your visit the Umuzi women will create an elaborate meal of six succulent traditional dishes - prepared the Zulu way, served with fresh fruit and washed down with your choice of more Zulu beer, wine or soft drinks
Please note - the cultural programme is only offered for groups of at least 10 people.
How to get there Travel via the N1 north to Empangeni. Take the R34. Turn down Kwabhekithunga / Stewarts Farm Road off the R34. The village is 4.5km's from turn off on Stewarts Farm.
